Byers’ Choice is Bristol’s Choice
by Cate Murway

With so many Historic Bristol on the River community members working towards the same goal, who knows what miracles can be accomplished for the Bucks County Women’s Fund, Inc. This is perfect timing!
In 1928, the thirty-first President, Herbert Clark Hoover (1874 -1964) designated the third week of October as National Business Women's Week. This week celebrates the contributions of working women to the American society, economy and family. The objectives of the week, which have been heavily promoted by Business and Professional Women/USA [BPW/USA], are to promote full participation and equity for women in the workplace as well as publicize the achievements of professional women.

Play a part in this opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of these resourceful women, working for social change through their philanthropic endeavors benefited by soliciting funds from nontraditional sources.
The pivotal role played by these women is designed to effect fundamental changes.
This is testimony to these women entrepreneurs who are consistently bringing renewed life to Historic Bristol on the Delaware! They are "hands-on" and issue-focused. They understand that networking and sharing resources ultimately serves to help the compelling and universal causes they wish to promote.
Not exactly news, but anyone with a pulse can tell you that generosity and gratitude are both big contributors to happiness!

Executive Director at Bucks County Women's Fund Education, Kathleen  [Kathy] Welsh Beveridge, University of Notre Dame - Mendoza College of Business 2007 — 2009 (expected), is working toward a Masters Degree in Nonprofit Administration and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Kathy and her husband, Michael are the parents of 2 young sons, Colin and Keenan. She feels strongly that “women know what women need.” Carol Mignoni Ferguson, BCCC Board of Trustees and Board of Directors Ex-Officio, invited the Women’s Fund to be the fundraising recipient involving the 90% female artisan workforce Byers’ Choice, founded by Robert [Bob] and Joyce Byers, Sr. Bob Byers is on the Board of Directors of the FirstService Bank he founded in Bristol in the mid-90’s. Joanna Schneyder coordinated the Byers’ Choice display of holiday decorations with warmth that showed respect for timeless traditions in this Radcliffe Street Bank for the 32nd Annual Historic Bristol Day.
The resourceful women artisans are the secret behind the dynamic environment “good news company”, Byers’ Choice. They have been honored several times as one of The Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania. For 30 years, they have gone beyond the expected to craft the finest gifts to bring special warmth and traditions into your home. The Carolers, dressed in plaids and cheerfully singing, originally only graced the Byers' dining room table. They received compliments from all of the relatives, so Joyce knew just what to make for presents the following year! In 1978, Bob and Joyce Byers started to achieve their dream. Their fledgling business flourished in their “garage transformed into a workshop” and the Byers couple hired their first employee. The unique appearance and handcrafted quality of the Carolers quickly gained a following. The magical expression of joy that is visible in any Caroler comes directly from the loving and caring that the skilled artisans pour into their work!

Together, the Byers family now oversees a team of 180 artisans in PA who handcraft those same creations that started out on the dining room table many years ago. Now the quality product Carolers, at an affordable price, are sold in Mignoni Jewelry and Gifts!

In the spirit of Christmas, Byers' Choice donates over 20% of its profits to charity each year.

“We have a responsibility to our community, to give back, to improve the lives of others, and make it a better place to live. The spirit of Christmas must be with us 365 days a year. " -- Bob Byers, Sr.

You are invited to enjoy the all-inclusive [your donation, too!] sit down hot luncheon and gourmet dinner at the Kelch House. Dawn Kelch confided, “We’re normally closed on Monday but Chef John Branstetter and I willingly opened for this event!”
Work up an appetite for the incredibly delicious hot luncheon at 12:30pm or the tempting dinner feast at 5:30pm Monday, October 27, 2008.
